Despite the limited time for sightseeing, the social programme of the Maveba conference was excellent (Grazie Claudia). On December 13 we were offered a selection of pieces from the “The Coronation of Poppaea” by Claudio Monteverdi played and sung in the staircase of the Hospital of San Giovanni di Dio (Borgo Ognissanti 20). The recital was offered by the students of the Ancient Music Department of the Fiesole School of Music.
This Hospital was founded in 1382 by Simone Vespucci (great uncle of Amerigo Vespucci who baptized the American continent) and was dedicated to the treatment of the poor and of the pilgrims. This tradition of charity from merchants and manufacturers of silk has left many marks in what is now Florence’s historic center. The hospital was renovated around 1700 and the staircase where the concert took place was the work of Tiacciati (1735).
