It is always surprising to ear someone that has just discover a thing that we knew all our lives (and took it for granted) that is the pleasure of living in this city. Even the current difficulties seem less serious when thinking on what we have for free. A recent post in Paul Graham’s blog (www.paulgraham.com) called my attention to this book written by Bronnie Ware, a palliative care nurse.

The book was written following the impact of a post in her blog with a title that became the title of the book. The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, is about the most common regrets expressed to her by the people she had cared for. The five regrets can be expressed as this:

1.  don’t ignore your dreams.
2.  don’t work too much.
3. express what you think and feel.
4. keep in touch with your friends.
5. stop worrying and be happy.

One of the most important components of any time management system is the periodic review of the list of things to do. These five items are a good think to take into account in the process of task prioritization.

Activating the two step verification in the google account set-up is an easy way to make google login much more secure. When the two step verification is active, google sends an SMS with a verification code when you log in. Some computers can be trusted so that it does not ask for the verification code on those machines.

If you use gmail exchange server to synchronize your mobile phone contacts, agenda or email you will need to generate app-specific passwords and configure your phone with it. This is a one-time process.

As questões legais associadas às novas tecnologias são sempre interessantes. Neste caso trata-se da utilização de gravações da voz de um locutor em sistemas automatizados de atendimento telefónico.

O Tribunal da Relação de Lisboa pronunciou recentemente um acórdão em que condena a Vodafone Portugal a retirar de serviço quaisquer gravações e locuções com a voz da locutora e actriz Ana Lamy, bem como a não utilizar, reproduzir ou divulgar as gravações e locuções sem prévio consentimento escrito desta. Foi também condenada a pagar uma compensação em dinheiro com um valor de 8113,80 euros por cada ano em que a voz tiver sido usada sem contratualização. As gravações foram realizadas com base num contrato estabelecido no ano 2000 e renovado até 2005 altura em que a locutora escreveu uma carta considerando abusiva a sua futura utilização. A locutora entende que, de acordo com os usos da profissão, todas as locuções têm um prazo de validade de um ano a partir da data da 1ª exibição ou 15 dias após a gravação e que uma vez terminado tal prazo de validade há lugar ao pagamento integral das peças (renovação dos direitos), sendo obrigatória a autorização antecipada do locutor em causa.

O tribunal considerou que o contrato envolve a limitação voluntária de direito de personalidade, designadamente a autorização para uso da voz, que integra o núcleo do direito geral de personalidade e que tal limitação pode ser revogada a todo o momento. Considera que as gravações não podem ser propriedade da Vodafone independentemente do que resultar do contrato e que a renovação dos direitos não foi prevista nem afastada no contrato.

Imagino que a Vodafone irá recorrer desta decisão, mas as questões levantadas são relevantes. A utilização de sistemas de síntese de fala é cada vez mais vulgar: começou nos sistemas de atendimento telefónico, estendeu-se aos de GPS e temos agora os assistentes pessoais automatizados como o Siri.

Quase todos os sistemas de síntese de fala usam ou foram treinados com fala de um locutor, mantendo a fala sintetizada grande parte das características da sua voz. Eu não conheço todos os locutores que deram a voz aos diversos sistemas existentes para português europeu, mas consigo identificar as vozes que se tornaram mais famosas do que os próprios locutores. Estas têm nomes como Amália e Eusébio (Loquendo-Nuance), Madalena e Joana (Nuance), Violeta e Vicente (Voiceinteraction), Celia, Elia e Ester (Acapela), Hélia (Microsoft), etc. A generalização deste conceito de direito de personalidade será certamente um incentivo ao uso de modelos de síntese estatísticos baseados em múltiplas vozes de forma a minimizar o risco de se identificar o locutor na fala sintetizada.

A year ago Cristina Fonseca attended the first entrepreneurship talks organized by Beta-i. She and Tiago Paiva had concluded their MSc Degrees in Communication Networks Engineering at IST, tried and failed 3 projects, another one was mildly successful, before creating Talkdesk. By using TalkDesk services, a business can set up a customer support center in minutes with a simple internet browser. When a call is received, the customer information is automatically pulled up in a browser window along with call history. The power of TalkDesk is its interoperability with popular CRM (Customer Relationship Management) services like Salesforce, Olark and Zendesk. They were selected to be one of the nine companies to compete at the first annual Twilio Conference in 2011 for a chance to win one of two final investments from the first Twilio Fund. They won the first prize: a $50,000 investment from the Twilio Fund, a micro-fund that was started by 500 Startups and SV Angel. After that, they were selected for the new class of 34 companies, Batch 002, of the 500 Startups accelerator in Silicon Valley. This Friday was Cristina’s turn to talk about her success story.

After her talk she reminded me that she attended one of my seminars on effective study methods, that I regularly teach at IST. She told me that it was the first time she realized that she could be a good student and still have time for other projects.
